I know that the ongoing uncertainty of the future of the Harlequin Theatre has been a source of concern for some time now. There has been universal agreement that this valued and indispensable asset must be saved - but uncertainty over whether this would be possible.
I'm pleased to say we now have a very positive development.
The Executive of Conservative controlled Reigate & Banstead Borough Council (RBBC) met on 30th January and at that meeting they approved a commitment (that will then go to Full Council) to ".... undertake necessary works to bring the theatre back into use in its previous configuration... It is proposed to earmark £10 million for this purpose." This is a hugely welcome step forwards and I want to thank the Executive for recognising the importance of getting the Harlequin open once again. I also want to pay tribute to the Harlequin Support Group for diligently and consistently calling for this.
I know that there are still outstanding questions on matters including the provision of suitable temporary alternative venues - and I will report back when there is more clarity on this.
