It was good to talk to That's TV South East earlier this month about my concerns regarding the Government’s review of the planned Epsom and St Helier Hospital improvements and the new hospital in Sutton.
Following my written question to the Secretary of State for Health asking for clarity, I’ve received the following response:
“We recognise the need for investment in National Health Service estates across the country, including at Epsom and St. Helier. We will provide the investment and reform needed to get patients the care they deserve.
As my Rt hon. Friend, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care announced, and as subsequently confirmed in my Rt hon. Friend, the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s statement on 29 July 2024, we will be undertaking a full and comprehensive review of the New Hospital Programme to provide a realistic and costed timetable for delivery.”
Although the above doesn’t tell us anything new, it’s reassuring that they recognise there is a need for investment locally.
Moving forwards, I will work constructively with the new Government on delivering the improvements to our local hospitals, including the new hospital in Sutton. I will therefore be seeking a meeting at the earliest opportunity to understand more about the review and what criteria projects will need to meet to qualify for funding in the short term. I will keep you updated.
